Gretna Green has always been a favourite location amongst couples and we recently received an invite to eat out at the town’s beautiful Smiths Hotel.

Gretna Green has always been a favourite location amongst couples and we recently received an invite to eat out at the town’s beautiful Smiths Hotel.

We decided that we would make an evening of it, leaving the kids at home. Gretna is surprisingly close, just 15 miles - and now that the new ring road around Carlisle, due to open in April, Gretna will be even closer to The Tranquil Otter.

Not having visited Smiths at Gretna before I was expecting something quite traditional in character and was taken aback by the contemporary look and feel of the restaurant and lounge. We ate in the Chain Mail restaurant and for the life of me I cannot remember the significance except that the hotel is situated close to the Wold Famous Blacksmiths Shop.

Spoilt for choice we both decided to have a starter and mains, without realising what a treat the bread tray would be. We were not expecting to have the bread served in flour pots, nor did we expect the roasted garlic in balsamic with chilli. Nick had game and I had risotto with white truffle, I used not to understand why people fussed about white truffle, now I wish I’d tried it sooner. Being a teetotaller I cannot comment on the wine, I am reliably told that the Chilean Merlot was excellent, as was the Cabernet Sauvignon. We were very impressed with the quality of the food, service and location and would recommend the Smiths restaurant experience to our guests.

When we were there we were shown the private dining facilities, what a great idea for Valentine’s Day or for one's honeymoon.
