Things to do Cumbria
Whether you are stating at the Tranquil Otter for two nights or two weeks, there is plenty to do and see here in like the Lake District, Keswick, Cockermouth and Carlisle, each just a short drive away.
We’ve selected some things that we’ve personally enjoyed and had great feedback about from guests. If you feel we’ve missed anything, please let us know.
Walk
Long or short circular walks in the beautiful rugged landscape that is Cumbria and The Lake Distict.
Eat
Country Pub or smart restaurant, either way experience great food & an equally great welcome.
Swim
Make a splash in one of the local private pools or go a little further for a wave pool and slides.
Parks & Beauty Spots
Solway Firth, Hadrian’s Wall, waterfalls and more. There is much to choose from locally.
Activities
Climb, Cycle, Jump and Ride. If activity is for you, there are many options. Plan ahead to get the most out of your stay.
Local History
Borders have histories of their own, Scotland/England is no expection. Romans, Vikings and early monarchies of both are all in the mix.
Family things to do
Have young ones to entertain? Plan your stay to include a day on a farm, an adventure playground & more.
Wildlife
Each lodge has its own flat-bottomed boat, explore the Lough, feed the waterfowl or roam ancient woodlands.
Things to do in Thurstonfield
The Tranquil Otter is a rural location; on the outskirts of Thurstonfield, one of the six villages on the Solway Plain. There is much to do and see within an hours drive.
Choice of Things to do during your stay at the Tranquil Otter
Cycle, walk, drive or taxi (there are few buses from Thurstonfield).
Walk 10 minutes to nearest pub The Royal Oak Inn at Moorhouse, and the landlord has kindly offered a lift back to Tranquil Otter guests. Further pubs within walking and cycling distance, 2-3 miles away are The
- Greyhound inn Burgh by Sands at Burgh by Sands.
- Wellington in Great Orton.
- Drovers Rest at Monkhill.
Hadrian’s Wall
This world heritage site is high on many bucket lists and is on our doorstep. Hadrian’s Wall path passes through Burgh by Sands, follow the path along the river to Carlisle, a great days walk.
Things to do Carlisle
Carlisle is a historic city, most buildings have a story to tell. The Castle, the Civic Centre building and Dixon’s chimney dominate the skyline, don’t be fooled by the lack of skyscrapers. The Castle, Cathedral and Dixon’s Chimney were the dominating economic influences of old.
The Castle is now home to the Military Museum of Cumbria, and The Torchlight Tours are a great way to get a bone-chilling insight into the past.
