The Solway Coast is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty

We’re located between the ancient Roman city of Carlisle and the Solway Coast that forms part of the border between England and Scotland. It has been a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty since 1964.

The area is well known for its stunning variety of bird and wildfowl life. The sand dunes, saltmarsh, shingle beds and peat mosses make it a favourite area for oystercatchers, curlews, plovers, lapwings, dunlins, godwits, redshanks and turnstones. Learn more about the secret Solway.

See the Glories of the Northern Lakes and Fells of the English Lake District

We’re on the northern edge of the English Lake District. In just a few miles, you can find yourself witnessing the glories of Ullswater, Derwent Water and the magnificent Northern Fells such as Latrigg, Blencathra and Skiddaw.

The World Heritage Site of Hadrian’s Wall

We’re a short distance from Hadrian’s Wall, a spectacular World Heritage Site that stretches across some of the wildest and most dramatic scenery in England. It was the north-west frontier of an empire that stretched for 2,500 miles across Europe and the Middle East. It’s a fascinating insight into the world of Roman Britain.  There are continuing excavations at Vindolanda.

The Romance and Battlegrounds of the Scottish Borders

If you travel North from The Tranquil Otter, in under an hour, you’ll find yourself in the Scottish Borders, which will enthral you with tales of romantic heroes, literary giants and marauding outlaws. You can even visit Traquair House, where Bonnie Prince Charlie stayed before his infamous defeat at the Battle of Culloden. A local legend says that the imposing gates of this house will remain shut until there’s a Stuart back on the throne.
