Turner & Rembrandt come to Carlisle
Exhibition from 19th October 2019 to 5th January 2020
Follow in the footsteps of Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775–1851), at the Northern Exposure exhibition at Tullie House. The exhibition sits alongside works by Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (1606 – 1669), the two masters ‘meet’ in Tullie House Museum & Art Gallery. Tullie House is commemorating the 350th anniversary of the death of Rembrandt.
Turner: The Northern Exposure
The core of the Turner exhibition is will host 13 stunning colour studies on loan from the Turner bequest at Tate alongside two of Turner’s sketchbooks which he carried with him on his journey across the North. The sketchbooks are filled with subjects that he would return to again and again throughout his life.
The exhibition at Tullie House is supplemented with others of Turner’s works inspired by landscape of the Lake District.
Study the Ullswater Lake from Gowbarrow Park, on loan from The Whitworth, Manchester and plan a hike on Gowbarrow Park to see the view in person. Fall in love with the stunning mountain landscapes as did Turner before you.
Rembrandt: Etchings from the British Museum
The British Museum holds one of the most important collections of Rembrandt’s prints and drawings in the world. This Autumn a selection of these are displayed in Tullie House alongside some of Rembrandt’s work that is part of Tullie House’s own collection.

Aira Force & Gowbarrow Fell Hike
Aira Force and Gowbarrow Fell is a varied and exciting hike. See the waterfall where, in Wordsworth’s poem, the beautiful but tragic Lady Emma plunged to her death.
Hike up to the Gowbarrow Common and be inspired by the landscape that cast a spell on Turner. This is just one of five hikes recommended in our blog Amazing Lake District Hikes. Click here to read our full blog post.
