Enjoy Valentine’s Day in Cumbria and the Lake District

There are many ways to enjoy Valentine’s Day in the Lake District, it doesn’t need to be about fancy restaurants, roses and champagne. The landscape is stunning and well known for its connection to the Romantic poets such as William Wordsworth, Samuel Coleridge and Thomas de Quincey. The colours of spring have inspired some very famous romantic poetry over the years. We’ve picked out some ideas and beauty spots to act as a backdrop to one of the most romantic days in the year. If you are visiting the region during over Valentine’s Day and want somewhere special to ‘pop the question’ or you just want somewhere idyllic to eat your sandwiches, here are some of our favourite places for picnics.

Birdoswald Roman Fort – Birdoswald can be found at the western end of Hadrian’s Wall. It’s a beautiful setting, considered by many to be the most picturesque spot along the entire 73 miles of Hadrian’s Wall. You get a lovely view of the River Irving. Read more.
Talkin Tarn Country Park – Talkin Tarn is just a few miles from Carlisle is made up of 120 acres of parkland and countryside. There is a beautiful walk around the water’s edge. It’s stunning place for a picnic.
Settle to Carlisle rail journey – This scenic train journey takes you through the Yorkshire Dales, over the stunning Ribblehead Viaduct and through the rolling hills of the Eden Valley before arriving at Carlisle.
Aira Force, Ullswater – Aira Force is arguably the most beautiful waterfall the county. It has lots of picnic spots and we have it on good authority that William Wordsworth was inspired to write his famous ‘Daffodils’ poem after walking this famous route. Read more.
Catbells and Ashness Bridge – This is a stunning picnic spot that is romantic for couples, and is also a popular walk for families. The route is not too difficult for novice walkers, and so it a great way to enjoy spectacular views of Derwentwater. From Valentine’s Day onwards, Cumbria and the Lake District is stunningly beautiful. The newborn lambs begin to appear in the fields and the snowdrops start to give way to the daffodils. This is a wonderful time for a visit. We hope to see you soon.
