Carlisle City Heritage | The Tranquil OtterCarlisle City Heritage Walk

John Higham’s “In the Footsteps of Time” – a walking tour of the Historic Quarter of the City of Carlisle is a delight.  The set out in guide can be combined to include a walk along the River Eden along Hadrian’s Wall path to Sheepmount Stadium.
  1. Park at the Sands Centre CA1 1JQ – we can provide you with a map of the City Centre.
  2. Make your way to the Market Cross. Amazingly, prices for ale and bread were regulated and announced at the Market Cross. The lion on the Cross is reading a book, find out what he is reading in the guide.
  3. The Town Hall is now a tourist information centre and a gift shop.
  4. The Guildhall is now a museum, we recommend it for families and couples.
  5. You’ll be surprised to know that a former President of the USA stayed at the Crown & Mitre, as did Sir Walter Scott.
  6. St Cuthbert’s Lane leads you to St Cuthbert’s Church; the Saint visited Carlisle in 685AD.
  7. The Tithe Barn used to be a grain store and is now a place for hosting events.
  8. West Wall is part of the City Wall that remains, and once protected the City from attack.
  9. Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery was once the Tullie’s family home. The main street of Roman Carlisle passed through what is now the gardens.
  10. Approach the castle from Tullie House using the underpass and see if your family name belongs to one of the Border families. And read the cursing stone, which records the curse placed on Carlisle by the Bishop of Glasgow.
  11. Walk, or saunter through Bitts Park and back along the river to the Sands Centre.
