Luxury Lodges near Lake District

The Lake District

Cumbria boasts fells and mountains, meres and lakes plus Britain’s third river and even two World Heritage Sites: Hadrian’s Wall (with its path on our doorstep) and the Lake District National Park. The Tranquil Otter provides luxury lodges near the Lake District.  We are situated on the Solway Firth, recognised as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the western boundary between Dumfriesshire in Scotland and Cumbria in England.

Lakes in Cumbria

We are well placed for exploring the Lakes with three of the largest within 30-miles. When visiting the largest of all, Windermere, the largest lake in England about 10 miles long, head for Bowness on its banks – a lively, pretty little town with lots to do and see. However, don’t miss the quieter lakes nearer us – Ullswater, Bassenthwaite Lake and Derwent Water. On the other hand, for those looking to brush shoulders with trees instead of people, the Tranquil Otter provides a calming retreat on a private nature reserve with its own private lake, known as The Lough.

Luxury Lodges

The Tranquil Otter has eight luxury lodges and the Lough House, all five-star rated by Visit England. Each lodge sits at the water’s edge with its private lakeside deck – a great place to hang out, enjoy the wonderful views across the Lough and get to know some of our 91 species of bird (according to the RSPB count). Only bird calls to wake you in the morning and ink-dark sky to soothe you to sleep at night. These plus your private hot-tub and boat and high-speed internet are some of the things that make the Otter unique.  You can click here to read the latest wildlife report of waterfowl and birds at the Tranquil Otter during May.

Eating and Drinking
Cumbria is one of Britain’s great food counties. Two internationally famous butchers in the next village (Great Orton) Mulhollands and Cranston’s at Orton Grange have great ranges of locally sourced Cumberland sausages and meat which they will butcher just as you prefer. Cranston also has a stock local fresh fruit and vegetables and a great deli selection. Of course, self-catering doesn’t mean you have to slave at the cooker. The many great local restaurants and country pubs can be found on our website at Where to eat and drink in Carlisle.
